The Valorheart is a straight sword in Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel.

In-Game Description

Weapon once wielded by the Champion of the Undead Match. A special paired set consisting of a broad sword and a lion shield.
The champion fought on, without rest, until he lost his mind. In the end, only his page and a lone wolf stayed at his side.
Skill: Lion Stance
While in stance, use normal attack to thrust forward with shield up, and strong attack to execute a shield bash with a lion's roar.

Availability[]

Obtained after defeating the Champion's Gravetender and Gravetender Greatwolf.

Characteristics[]

The Valorheart is a special paired sword and small shield that excels at trading against weapons of equal size and coming out on top.

When one-handed the weapon is very unremarkable, possessing the standard Long Sword moveset, albeit with a shorter range than other straight swords, requiring the wielder to get closer to the target than usual. However, Valorheart truly shines when it is two-handed, equipping the shield in the off-hand and completely changing its moveset in the process.

Standard attacks, as well as rolling and jumping attacks, will utilize the shield to block while attacking, drastically reducing any damage taken when attacking at the same time as the opponent. At the same time, the rolling and jumping two-handed attacks, as well as the standard attack from the skill stance, will inflict Thrusting damage, allowing the wielder to Counter Attack the opponent. This makes the weapon extremely strong for performing trades against opponents wielding weapons of equal size, the shield greatly reducing the damage taken while also inflicting full damage against the enemy. It finds its niche when wielded by highly aggressive players, as they can close the range to their opponents and use the shield to block attacks while throwing themselves recklessly at the enemy.

However, as a result of heavy reliance on the shield, Valorheart is extremely stamina-hungry, requiring its wielder to invest heavily into Endurance if they do not want to be guard-broken during trades. As well, the lion shield fares poorly against greatsword-sized weapons and larger, as even during successfully blocked trades the wielder will still take a considerable amount of damage and lose large amounts of stamina, putting them at great risk of being riposted. And finally, the shield has poor elemental absorption, meaning that an opponent wielding an infused weapon, even of equal size to Valorheart, can still come out on top of trades by cutting straight through its elemental defenses.
