Unkindled are past individuals who tried to link the First Flame and become Lords of Cinder, but were too weak to do so and were burnt to ashes. Like the Undead, they are cursed with undeath, and branded with the darksign. With Lothric having refused to link the Flame, the Lords of Cinder are resurrected to fuel it; but with the Lords having left their thrones and abandoned their duty, Unkindled are resurrected to seek them out and bring the Lords back to their thrones.
Those who are Unkindled appear to be a sort of opposite to the Undead seen in other games: whereas the Undead seek Humanities or Human Effigies, objects comprised of some form of darkness, Unkindled seek Embers, small remnants of flame. Additionally, Unkindled are normally incapable of hollowing without the aid of Dark Sigils.
Known Unkindled include the Ashen One, Anri of Astora, Siegward of Catarina, Hawkwood the Deserter and Sister Friede, among others.
Causes[]
After prince Lothric, the promised Lord of Cinder of the current generation, refused to link the First Flame, the First Flame resurrected four past Lords of Cinder so that they may also relink the flame: Ludleth of Courland, Aldrich, Devourer of Gods, Yhorm the Giant, and the Abyss Watchers.
However, only Ludleth of Courland remained at his throne, and the other three departed their thrones and returned to their homelands. The Flame then starts to resurrect a number of Unkindled, in the hopes that they may seek embers and slay the Lords of Cinder and bring their ashes to Firelink Shrine and link the First Flame. Some of these Unkindled are related to several of the respective Lords; Anri of Astora and Horace the Hushed were children who survived Aldrich's gluttony, Siegward of Catarina was an old friend of Yhorm's, and Hawkwood the Deserter is a former member of the Abyss Watchers.
The Sable Church of Londor revere the Unkindled, as it is prophesied that an Unkindled will become the Lord of Hollows and bring the Age of Dark, but Elfriede rebelled against this prophesy and abandoned Londor, fleeing to the Painted World of Ariandel instead.
