For anyone who didn't see this thread, the following sums up the general sentiment of that thread:
While it was true that the comment sections could be helpful sometimes, it was more often than not just stuff that didn't have to be there, or that had to be deleted. For about the past 6 to 8 months, the comment section of an article received more attention than the article itself, which shows in the overall quality of DaSII articles when compared to DaSI articles.
Also, it's worth noting that the comments haven't been removed completely. They were automatically archived when we changed from comments to talk pages. The only way they would have been permanently deleted was if we had used a bot to delete them before we changed over.
The idea of the change had two purposes: the first was to see whether it promoted contribution to articles. Thus, if the experiment doesn't work, we can always revert the changes and restore the comments. The second was to promote usage of the Forum, which is the most under-used area of the wiki. Whether this happens, I don't know, but the ability to comment on pages is still there, just in a different place.
