Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth is a character in Dark Souls III.
In-Game Description
- It is said that Rosaria, the mother of rebirth, was robbed of her tongue by her firstborn, and has been waiting for their return ever since.
Location[]
Found in the Cathedral of the Deep, in front of the Rosaria's Bed Chamber bonfire.
Description[]
When encountered, she will silently allow access into her covenant and will receive Pale Tongues as offerings to raise ranks while being a member. She also allows the player to reallocate attributes and change their appearance up to five times in a single playthrough.
Lore[]
Rosaria is a descendant of Gwynevere, Princess of Sunlight[1][2] and as such she was among the Irithyllians[3], hybrids between the race of the gods of Anor Londo and humans who inhabit Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, the city built for them on the ruins of Anor Londo[4]. She also possessed a Crescent Moon Sword infused with the power of the moon worshipped by the nobles of Irithyll[5] as Darkmoon Gwyndolin had become the king of the gods[6] and ruler of their new city[7].
Rosaria is the mysterious mute leader of the Rosaria's Fingers covenant whom many of her followers consider the former a goddess. Archdeacon Klimt in particular defected from the Aldrich Faithful, instead choosing to serve Rosaria. Rosaria's followers collect tongues for her comfort so that she in exchange will grant them rebirth.
Notes[]
- It is not possible to change genders while changing appearance with Rosaria. This is probably to avoid conflict with Anri's questline.
- Once the player reaches the first bonfire in Anor Londo, Leonhard will murder Rosaria, leaving a Black Eye Orb behind; with it, the player can invade him and retrieve her soul. Her soul can be used either to revive her or it can be given to Ludleth of Courland in exchange for the Bountiful Sunlight miracle.
- Even if she dies there will be no consequences, as the player will still be able to reallocate, change appearance, and offer Pale Tongues to the covenant in order to rank up.
- Offering her Pale Tongues to increase the covenant level will automatically end Sirris's questline.
Trivia[]
- Her name is Italian and means both "She who pray to the Lady" and "Crown of Roses".
- She slightly smiles every time the player offers her a Pale Tongue.
- Attempting to rebirth more than 5 times will warn the player that they will become a Man-grub if they persist, however, accepting does nothing to the player.
- Interestingly, Rosaria being killed by Leonhard parallels Anastacia of Astora being killed by Knight Lautrec of Carim. Where Leonhard and Lautrec both fled to Anor Londo, both Rosaria and Anastacia are missing their tongues, both Leonhard and Lautrec keeps the soul of the woman killed and both carry out the murder out of devotion for the goddesses they serve: Rosaria and Fina respectively.
