Pilgrim Butterflies are enemies in Dark Souls III.
In-Game Description
- The Dragonslayer Armour, controlled by the Pilgrim Butterfly, lost its master long ago, but still remembers their sporting hunts.[1]
Description[]
Pilgrim Butterflies resemble trees with long, stick-like limbs, a long neck, and a head like a peach pit.
Location[]
Found flying above Lothric Castle.
Lore[]
- Note: This section relies heavily on speculation. Very few facts are offered in-game to substantiate most of the information here.
The Soul of Dragonslayer Armour is the only mention of these creatures. Upon close inspection, they are revealed to be composed of flesh and bone, and they are almost bent backward, with their rib cage jutting outward.
Their name may hint to the pilgrims of Londor, like Yoel, who all died on their way to the peak of Lothric; and just like them, the pilgrim butterflies fly upward to the peak of Lothric as well.
The butterflies also use dark magic both to control the Dragonslayer Armour and also to attack any who fight the Armour, a dark magic which they may have been taught In Londor due to the Londor Braille Divine Tome.
Similar to the Angels being immortal unless you kill their Pilgrim Pupa, some of the Butterflies appear to have been using the Dragonslayer Armour as a host, as when the Armour is slain, the Pilgrim Butterflies involved in the fight die as well. However, there remain numerous other Butterflies alive in the distance, possibly suggesting other hosts.
Another theory is that they're a final evolutionary phase of the hollows turning into trees in Lower lothric & the Undead Settlement, which is backed up by the fact that most hollow trees face towards upper Lothric, and the general shape of both creatures.
Notes[]
- While passive throughout the course of the level, Pilgrim Butterflies will attack during the second phase of the Dragonslayer Armour's boss battle.
Trivia[]
- Pilgrim Butterflies are actually who control the Dragonslayer Armour.
- The trees portraying hollows born from their logs in the High Wall of Lothric resemble these creatures.
