Availability[]

Found in The Dreg Heap. From The Dreg Heap bonfire, proceed through the level until the church with two Lothric Knights. When leaving the church, proceed toward the right. In the back room of the building, a corpse will be holding the staff.

Characteristics[]

A catalyst that specializes in casting Dark Sorceries, the Murky Longstaff differentiates itself from its Izalith cousin by specializing solely in Intelligence.

Unlike the Izalith Staff, which benefits from leveling both Intelligence and Faith, the Murky Longstaff has poor scaling in the latter stat, meaning that it can reach its full potential without having to invest a large number of levels into Faith. As well, the staff's Spell Buff soft-caps at 45 Intelligence, which allows its wielder to achieve peak effectiveness without having to go all the way up to 60 Intelligence.

Like the Izalith Staff, the Murky Longstaff gains a power boost when casting Dark Sorceries like Great Deep Soul, which increase in strength by approximately 20%. However, as the bulk of the staff's Spell Buff comes from Intelligence, this means that it can also cast standard Sorceries like Great Heavy Soul Arrow to great effect.

The Murky Longstaff's various shortcomings are also its greatest strengths. For casting purely Sorceries, it is outclassed by the Court Sorcerer's Staff at 60 Intelligence, even with the 20% boost to Dark Sorceries, and all Sorceries cast from other staves can benefit from the boost from Steady Chant, whereas Chant from the Depths only strengthens Dark Sorceries. As well, when compared to the Izalith Staff, Dark Sorceries cast by the Murky Longstaff are weaker if comparing both staves at their soft caps. However, because the Murky Longstaff only needs 45 Intelligence and no Faith to be effective, it does not require nearly as much level investment as the Izalith Staff, and the same can be said when compared to the Court Sorcerer's Staff; in both cases, a great number of levels can instead be invested into areas such as Strength or Vigor, or the staff can be used effectively on medium-level builds rather than only being strong at very high levels. And finally, unlike the Izalith Staff, which performs very poorly when casting standard Sorceries, the Murky Longstaff can still be very potent when casting standard Sorceries, giving it a degree of flexibility that the former does not possess.
