Characteristics[]
A time-honored classic returning from the previous Souls games, the Moonlight Greatsword is a strong weapon in the hands of a dedicated Sorcery caster.
Unlike its previous iterations, Dark Souls III's Moonlight Greatsword inflicts both physical and Magic damage, as well as being given scaling in Strength, albeit poorly. However, this does not change the fact that the physical scaling should be ignored, outside of meeting the minimum wielding requirements, in favor of leveling Intelligence, as the Moonlight Greatsword has been traditionally built (though as is the case with most melee weapons, it only scales effectively up to 40 in the offensive stats). The physical damage component is useful when performing criticals, as both damage types are magnified during the attack, allowing it to more easily punch through foes' flat Defenses.
The Moonlight Greatsword uses the same moveset as the Greatsword of Judgment, utilizing horizontal and vertical slashes. However, it also has one of the longest reaches among greatswords, being beat only by the Wolf Knight's Greatsword and Onyx Blade. Its skill, Moonlight Vortex, charges the weapon for a powerful thrust attack that channels moonlight energy into a spear-like close-range attack to further augment its lethality. As such, this weapon is best utilized if the wielder equips heavy armor in order to utilize Poise, as is the case with all greatswords in the game.
Fully charging either the one- or two-handed strong attacks will unleash a wave of moonlight energy, at the cost of 4 Durability per use. The moonlight waves inflict only Magic damage; however, hitting an enemy with both the blade and the moonlight wave at close range will result in not only physical damage but also heavy Magic damage being dealt.
