Liliane is a mentioned character in Dark Souls III.
In-Game Description
- The third daughter Liliane, one of the founders of the Sable Church, is said to recount tales that portray the suffering and conflict of Hollows[1].
Liane is the youngest[1] of the three human sisters that were welcomed by Primordial Serpent Kaathe[2][3][4] into his service as his maidens, together with Elfriede, the eldest[5] and Yuria, the middle one[2]. They joined Kaathe and helped his with his goal[6] of finding and empowering a Dark Lord who could usurp the First Flame for themselves and use it to shape a new world for the sake of all Hollows, what was left of humanity after thousands of years of oppression by the Darksign[7][2][8]. And so Kaathe taught the three sisters, already highly skilled fencers[4], the art of the Dark Hand, capable of absorbing the humanity of their enemies[9][10]. Wearing their dark attire, Liliane and her sisters would thus become the founders of the Sable Church between just the three of them[4]: a faith and an organization that preached the coming of the Dark Lord that would claim the Flame[8] and aimed to offer salvation to all Hollows[4]. At some point the three sisters, now mentors of the Sable Church[4], settled in a land that would become known as Londor, the Hollow Realm[11], and over time and increasing number of undead and hollows would find refuge with them[11]. In Londor, the Sable Church would be built as a real building with black and twisted towers[12], and Elfriede, as the eldest sister, became the leader of the organization[5], but the fact that they were three founding sisters ensured that their legacy would survive and two other women could carry the torch of their goals and make sure that the Dark Lord emerged even if one of them went missing[8].
A culture and even religion completely opposite to the Way of White which worshiped the gods through miracles[13] also began to take shape in Londor. Liliane, as one of the founders of the Sable Church, started to recount tales that portrayed the suffering and conflict of Hollows to which they aimed to give salvation[1]. The woman even created a tome of dark miracles that were forbidden in the rest of the world as they offered salvation to the hollows and converely cursed all the other living beings[14]. The culture of Londor therefore not only rejected the gods and their rules and stories but shifted the object of veneration towards themselves, bringing attention to their tales and placing their faith on their own kind to perform miracles[15]. The Sable Church thus developed several different dark miracles such as the Dark Blade which allowed to reinforce weapons with the power of the dark[1] and and even sacrilegious miracles that blessed corpses transforming them into dark traps, as they believed that if undeath was human there would be no need to hesitate blessing corpses that were after all incopatible with living things[11]. The ancient dark miracles of Velka, that allowed to block the magic of those around, including themselves were also recovered[16].
When an Unkindled finally obtained the power necessary to usurp the First Flame and absorb its power, Liliane arrived on site together with her sister Yuria, taking her place at the side of the Dark Lord who would unify the Hollows and finally bring them the expected salvation[17][18].
