Not to be confused with Humanity (item).

Humanity Icon Humanity is a gameplay mechanic in Dark Souls.

In-Game Description

Number of black sprites within one's bosom. Symbolizes human nature and determines item discovery and resistance to curses.

Overview[]

Humanity is required to revert to the unhollowed state. Upon death, players lose all Humanity and souls and revert to near-Hollow status. Recovering bloodstains allow players to regain all lost Souls and Humanity (although they do not become unhollowed).

Humanity increases the item discovery value; the more Humanity players have (up until 10 humanity), the higher the value is.

Humanity also increases the power of Chaos weapons (up to 10 humanity) and Curse resistance (up to 30 humanity).

Gaining Humanity[]

Players may use the item Humanity and the similar Twin Humanities to gain one or two points of humanity, respectively. Humanity is randomly acquired in an area up to a predetermined amount as long as players haven't killed the area boss or helped the host defeat the area boss as a White Phantom. Red Phantoms leave a bloodstain worth one humanity upon defeat, with the exception of Marvelous Chester (AotA). The Dark Hand's strong attack steals humanity from other players and some NPCs.

Method Amount Gained
Humanity Item 1
Twin Humanities 2
Darkhand strong attack NPC Depends on NPC
Buy Depends on Shop
Defeating Enemies Up to 10 in each area
White Phantom boss kill 1
Red Phantom bloodstain 1
Invade as Red Phantom defeat Opponent 1
Defeat summoned Phantom or Invading Phantom 1
Dark Hand strong attack Depends on Covenant Rank

Farming Liquid Humanity[]

In some areas, before the boss is defeated, certain enemies will increase your humanity count after many of them are killed. These enemies usually have one thing in common; they were once human, but are now undead and hollow. After a set number of an enemy type is killed, one humanity will be absorbed. Some enemies require fewer kills than others, as they have different values of 'humanity worth'.

  • A total of 10 humanities can be absorbed in one area while the boss is still alive.
  • The first humanity drops when the 'humanity worth' meter is built up to 100, the next drops at 105, third at 110 -- and the tenth drops at 300 (+200%).
    • As an example: For a creature with a 'humanity worth' of 6, you have to kill 17 for the first humanity, 18 for the second, 19 for the third -- and finally, 50 kills for the tenth and last humanity drop.
  • The increase in percentages for the consecutive drops are the same in all areas, and are listed in the table below:
Humanity: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
Kills: n (base amount) n+5% n+10% n+20% n+40%
Humanity Worth 100 105 110 120 140
Humanity: 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
Kills: n+60% n+90% n+120% n+155% n+200%
Humanity Worth 160 190 220 255 300

The humanity worth meter is tied to each area, and the same enemy type can also have a different 'humanity worth' depending on the area.

Using Humanity[]

Humanity can be spent at bonfires to reverse Hollowing or to kindle bonfires. Reversal of hollowing allows players to summon other players and invade worlds; kindling increases the maximum amount of Estus Flask charges a bonfire provides. Humanity is also needed to level up in the Chaos Servant and Darkwraith Covenants. Having a higher Humanity count increases resistance to Curses and increases attack power with Chaos weapons. However, only 1-10 humanity will affect the attack power of Chaos weapons.

Usage Consumed
Kindling 1: Up to 3 times
Reverse Hollowing 1
Cure Curse 1
Darkwraith Covenant 1
Chaos Servant Covenant 1
Chaos weapons changes 1-10
Spell changes 1-10

  • Prior to patch 1.04, item discovery scaled up to 30 humanity.
