Hollow Soldiers, also known as Undead Soldiers, are enemies in Dark Souls.
Description[]
The Undead Soldier is an enemy located in the Undead Asylum, Firelink Shrine, Undead Burg and Undead Parish. There are three varieties wielding either a sword, spear or crossbow.
Strategy[]
In general, Undead Soldiers have low health, but can still be a considerable threat to new characters. They usually attack in small groups, augmenting their effectiveness.
Undead Soldiers that wield crossbows are often positioned in out-of-the-way locations (usually on high ground) and act as a support class to the melee-focused Soldiers. When approached, they will either retreat and continue shooting, or draw a sword and act as a shieldless sword-wielder.
Spear-wielding Undead Soldiers are more cautious fighters than their sword and crossbow counterparts, and will move slowly with their shield up until an opportunity to attack arises. It is also possible to take advantage of their slow movement speed and run away from them when dealing with other Undead, as other enemies can be dealt with before the spear-wielder makes its way to the player. Hitting them while they are in their defensive state usually provokes them to hit, making them vulnerable to Parrying. Strafing their attacks also opens them up for backstabs.
Magic, such as Soul Arrow or Fireball, is effective against them; some damage goes even through their shields. This is best used out of their reach, or before they are aware of the player.
Critical attacks, the Parry and Riposte and Backstab, are exceedingly efficient methods to dispatch these enemies.
Another simple tactic is to kick their shields or attack when two-handing weapons, staggering them for a few moments, and thus leaving them vulnerable to attack. This is particularly useful on those that use spears, as they spend most of their time in a defensive stance.
