Availability[]
Found on a corpse on the Road of Sacrifices. From the Crucifixion Woods bonfire, head into the nearby ruins that lead to the Crystal Sage. Inside the first room with several Sage's Prentice and a Sage's Devout the staff can be found inside an alcove on the first floor next to the stairs.

Possessing an unusual scaling curve, the Heretic's Staff is a strong catalyst for builds with low to moderate amounts of Intelligence.
Unlike other staves, the Heretic's Staff already possesses Spell Buff and immediately begins scaling upon meeting its wielding requirements, rather than only starting once Intelligence has exceeded 18. This scaling is rather weak at values under 30 Intelligence, allowing other staves to temporarily surpass it; however, between 30 and 40 Intelligence its scaling greatly improves, before falling off again after 40 Intelligence. This means that the Heretic's Staff is a strong catalyst below 25 Intelligence, is surpassed by others in the 30 Intelligence range, and then reclaims the lead between 35 and 45 Intelligence, before other staves catch up and exceed it for the final time.
For this reason, the Heretic's Staff is considered the ideal staff for Intelligence casters who are still in the process of creating their builds and wish to deal meaningful damage in the meantime, or for hybrid/utility casters who wish to stop at 45 Intelligence or lower.
