The Great Scythe is a reaper in Dark Souls III.

In-Game Description

Attacks with this large scythe, normally used for crop harvesting, are effective at breaking past shields.
The magnificent sharp curved blade instils fear in opponents. Perhaps it is their survival instinct at work.
Skill: Neck Swipe
This attack aims for the scruff of a foe's neck, and when successful, functions as a head shot, inflicting heavy damage.

Availability[]

Found in the Undead Settlement. From the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, head onward and enter the destroyed house located in front of the graveyard where the giant archer's arrows start raining down. Go upstairs, turn around and jump toward the broken wooden floorboards to reach it.

Characteristics[]

The Great Scythe is the archetype of its weapon class, a long-reaching polearm which can damage targets through raised shields.

Found early in the game, the Great Scythe's attributes make it attractive to builds that specialize in Dexterity. It is also the lightest reaper in the game, allowing builds with low Vitality to wield it with few problems. As with other polearms, it possesses a sweet-spot mechanic where hitting a target with the blade of the weapon will inflict full Slash damage, but if the target is inside of the weapon's arc it will inflict reduced damage and deal Strike damage instead.

It is one of two reapers in the game that can be infused to meet the wielder's specific build needs, the other being the Great Corvian Scythe. Compared to its larger cousin, the Great Scythe has more lenient stat requirements, making it more ideal for elemental builds that do not wish to level Strength and Dexterity too much. However, its damage output is weaker in virtually all cases, making the Corvian Scythe much more favored, especially in PvP situations.

However, the Great Scythe's most powerful asset is that, on top of being the lightest reaper in the game, it is also the one with the longest reach. With proper spacing, the Great Scythe is able to defeat virtually all halberds in the game, and can even outreach most spears and pikes. In the hands of one with patience, the Great Scythe is a powerful asset.
