Gael's Greatsword is a soul-transposed greatsword in Dark Souls III: The Ringed City.

In-Game Description

Greatsword of Slave Knight Gael, the only weapon that he kept with him from beginning to end.
Originally an executioner's sword made for decapitation, this blade is heavily chipped and stained with the blood of countless battles.
Skill: Blade of Peril
A precarious technique unique to undead Gael. Leap in any direction, slamming the greatsword to the ground, then follow with normal attack for a large spinning slash, or strong attack to back-step and jump forward in an overhead slam.

Availability[]

Obtained by transposing the Soul of Slave Knight Gael with Ludleth of Courland for 20,000 souls.

Characteristics[]

This greatsword is one of the most curious ones across its entire class. Not only does it deal strictly Strike damage, much like its unbroken version, it also deals Thrust on its first strong attacks. In essence, it has the exact moveset of the Onyx Blade, with only one difference, which is in fact unique to its class. When two-handing it, after a strong attack (which is a thrust), if used a follow-up strong attack, it will use the regular horizontal slash attack that the Bastard Sword/Flamberge/Greatsword of Judgment all have, instead of the regular vertical upward slash that all other greatswords with thrust attacks have when two-handed (Onyx Blade/Hollowslayer Greatsword/Claymore).

Its skill is unique and mimics the movement of Gael himself, with fluid and bestial motions.

Upon activating Blade of Peril, the player can select a direction and flip horizontally into a ground smash, this can be used to dodge and attack at the same time. Afterward, players can either use a weak attack or strong attack to complete the combo of the skill.

The weak attack will make players perform a sweeping spin attack (reminiscent of the special attack of the Farron Greatsword when two-handed). Well suited against multiple opponents.

The strong attack attack results in a quick dodge backwards, and then with an overhead lunging thrust into the ground (similar to Crow Quills' jumping attack, albeit extremely fast and with large hitbox). Better suited to avoid hyper armor attacks against single opponents.

An interesting thing is that using just the first attack of the Skill wastes very little FP, this means it can be spammed to throw off opponents.

It scales moderately with Strength and poorly with Dexterity. Thus it benefits better from Strength builds.

Notes[]

  • One of the most versatile weapons in game due to its ability to deal Thrust and Strike damage exclusively with a very effective moveset.
  • Like the Executioner's Greatsword, it is a very effective weapon to use against skeletal enemies.

Trivia[]

  • Gael's Greatsword is, design wise, an Executioner's Greatsword that has been soaked with blood, weathered down and broken from countless battles. Upon closer inspection, Gael's Greatsword is actually thicker, wider and longer than the Executioner's, with slightly longer guards. The size of the handle, however, remains the same. It even has the same weight.
  • The "Blade of Peril" skill is based entirely out of Gael's second and third phases.
  • The design of the blade, particularly the shape it is broken into, draws to mind the various Broken Straight Swords of previous games.
