Friede's Great Scythe (フリーデの大鎌) is a soul-transposed reaper in Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel.

Conjure a magic bladed support scythe into the left hand while the great scythe remains in the right, a stance derived from Elfriede's former swordmanship. Use normal attack to leap forward and swing twice, or strong attack to coat the earth with running frost.

Characteristics[]
Whereas most reapers are designed to keep foes at arm's length away, Friede's Great Scythe breaks the mold by allowing its wielder to employ an aggressive playstyle, making it one of the most unique weapons in the game.
Unlike most reapers, which do full damage when hitting the target with the blade and incur a damage penalty when the target is inside of its arc, Friede's Great Scythe instead does full damage at any range and inflicts increased damage when striking the target at its maximum reach. Additionally, the blade is imbued with Frost, making it the only reaper in the game that builds up Frostbite without having to buff it, as well as one of only four weapons in the game with innate Frost build-up on all of its attacks.
These advantages do not come without drawbacks, however. In order to wield the weapon, players must first invest a non-negligible amount of levels in Faith, which makes the weapon more difficult to build for. Additionally, despite what is listed in the weapon's information, with its normal moveset it cannot inflict Magic damage at all. As such, in regular situations this reaper is little different from the Pontiff Knight Great Scythe.
However, all of this changes when utilizing the weapon's skill, which is what truly sets this weapon apart from its peers. Entering the skill stance brings the support scythe to bear in the off-hand, allowing the completed weapon system to function like paired weapons. The primary scythe will inflict purely physical damage, scaling primarily with the wielder's Dexterity, while the conjured support scythe will inflict purely Magic damage, scaling purely with the wielder's Intelligence. While in this stance, the wielder gains Hyper Armor on all attacks, allowing them to take to the offensive against foes.
In the right hands, Friede's Great Scythe is a powerful and well-balanced weapon that combines range, damage, Frostbite buildup and strong aggressive options into a single package. Care must be taken to utilize it properly, however, as any mistakes made using the weapon can have disastrous consequences.
