The Bloodlust (血狂い Chikuruoshii, Blood-Crazed) is a katana in Dark Souls III.

In-Game Description

Katana of the old Mound-Maker.
The Mound-Maker piled sacrifices upon the altar, but became the final offering himself, leaving this katana as a gift for his dear family.
Skill: Bloodlust
Stain blade with one's own blood to temporarily grant uncanny sharpness. For one driven by bloodlust, nothing deserves to remain standing.

Availability[]

Awarded for attaining Rank 1 in the Mound-makers covenant.

Characteristics[]

In terms of visible statistics, Bloodlust is an unimpressive katana that is outperformed by most other options, particularly as it cannot be infused. As such the weapon is reliant on its namesake skill. When activated, the user stabs themselves with the sword, taking damage and inflicting 200 points of bleed build-up in exchange for a 30% increase to its physical damage as well as an increased bleed buildup. The buff lasts for about 45 seconds and allows Bloodlust to deal more physical damage than any other katana in the game, even rivaling the Frayed Blade in raw attack power.

However, the necessity of having the buff active at all times can make the weapon risky to use, particularly against opponents that can apply bleed themselves. Furthermore, while the Bloodlust skill can deal massive damage if it hits an enemy behind the user this tactic is extremely impractica. and as such the sword gives up the flexibility offered by attack skills like Hold or Darkdrift in favor of its higher damage output. With this in mind it may be prudent to have a backup weapon when using Bloodlust, particularly in a PvP scenario.
