The Bearer of the Curse is the player character and the main protagonist of Dark Souls II and its expansions The Lost Crowns. In the intro of the game, there is a woman and child shown. The significance of these people is not made known in-game, as the player does not remember them by the time the game has started. It can be speculated that they are the players wife and child or the player's mother holding them. An alternative is that they are not important at all, and are merely a representation of memories long forgotten through hollowing. The Bearer of the Curse went to Drangleic by a compulsion to find a way to break the curse of the undead and avoid at any cost becoming a hollow.
