Archdeacon Klimt is a mentioned character in Dark Souls III.

Lore[]

Saint Bident

The holy bident of Klimt.

Klimt was an archdeacon of the Way of White and one of the religious eminences of the Cathedral of the Deep[1], together with Archdeacon Royce and Archdeacon McDonnell[2], managing the structure and the rituals of purification from the stagnant Darkness that took place there[3][4]thanks to a peaceful and sacred body of water[5]. Klimt in particular had the task to attend to Rosaria, whom he deemed a goddess[1].

At one point, the cathedral welcomed Aldrich, a priest from Irithyll that took pleasure in eating humans and continued to do it until his own body collapsed into sludge[6]. The abomination that was Aldrich shared his perserse behaviour to others in the cathedral[7] and sacrifices were brough to him to appease his hunger and grant him the strenght to be able to link the First Flame and become a Lord of Cinder[6]. Even after Aldrich linked the First Flame a cult formed around his figure[8], but the deacons of the cathedral found themselves fighting the abominations that emerged from this Deep: what was once the peaceful and sacred structure in which ritual purifications took place began to become an accumulation of corruption, where the darkness stagnated and accumulated until it became the final rest of many abhorrent creatures[9]. McDonnel found delight in the stagnation of darkness, realizing that it would become the foundation of the world[10] and thus abandoned his faith in the First Flame and in the gods to place it in the rising Deep[11]. McDonnel spreaded his new belief among the other clerics of the cathedral along with his sorcery as created staffs who channeled faith in the Deep to produce dark sorceries and in time the cathedral's deacons became both clergymen and sorcerers[12], embracing the cult of the Deep[13].

Rosaria's Fingers (item)

The sacred seal of Klimt.

Seeing the corruption that had spread among the cathedral's clergy and how his companions had fallen to venerating the same rot they were supposed to fight, Klimt left his own faith behind him, symbolically throwing away his silver bident decorated by a holy symbol[14]. He thus dedicated himself to serving only Rosaria and his sacred seal became the symbol of those that pledged themselves to the covenant of the Rosaria's Fingers[15], a group that collected pale tongues from their defeated opponents in the name of Rosaria, doing this to change their bodies and be reborn or to comfort the voiceless goddess[15]. Those who continued to modify their bodies thanks to Rosaria's power at a certain point transformed into monstrous Man-grubs with the appearance of humanoid worms[16]. Despite this some of them continued to protect the Bed Chamber of their goddess and the holy symbol at the tip of their staff was that of Klimt's seal[17].

Theories[]

Rosaria no HUD
  • It is possible to theorize that Klimt, that remained in the service of Rosaria, became the deformed man-grub that the goddess embraces in her bed. In fact, entering into communion with the covenant requires the sacred seal of Klimt[18] and their followers are rewarded with the Man-grub's Staff with the same symbol of the man[19], implying that he's the one managing the coveant instead of the passive and silent Rosaria.

But what do you really know about these Lords of Cinder, these supposed legends? Let's take Aldrich, for one. A right and proper cleric, only, he developed a habit of devouring men. He ate so many that he bloated like a drowned pig, then softened into sludge, so they stuck him in the Cathedral of the Deep. And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?" and "At the foot of Lothric Castle, an old path still runs below the tower in the Undead Settlement.
