"...My time has come, has it?
Well, maybe I'll get to see an angel."
Stone-humped Hag

Angels (Japanese: 天使, Hepburn: Tenshi, lit. 'Heavenly Envoy') are enemies in Dark Souls III: The Ringed City.

Description[]

Angels are humanoid creatures that possess large shiny wings and whose lower bodies resemble that of insectoid locusts. They haunt the skies over the Dreg Heap and are initially passive; however, upon detecting a threat, they will relentlessly assault the target with shards of light and can summon auras that inflict curse.

Angels are seemingly immortal and can only be truly destroyed by destroying the Pilgrim Pupa that infects certain corpses of Pilgrims of Londor. This parasitic entity shares a link with the Angel and slaying it will permanently kill the creature.

Lore[]

These angelic creatures are physical projections created and controlled by Pilgrim Pupa[1] that spawned from the corpses of Pilgrims of Londor. These pilgrims were Hollows exiled from Londor and sent to Lothric on a pilgrimage with the specific goal of "dying"[2][3]. They were equipped with shell-shaped protections chained to their backs[4], similar to the robes of clerics created to contain the stagnant darkness that risked to become Pus of Man during long journeys[5][6]. In addition these pilgrims are given a dark miracle, the only tale known to them, that they believe carry words of forgiveness. In reality they are cursed by this magic that attracts more attention from foes, and consequently accelerates the achievement of their goal of "dying"[2][7]. When they finally die as they were ordered, the bodies of the pilgrims of Londor, whose humanity had accumulated and stagnated for a very long time inside their body during their journey, undergo a peculiar transformation and from them their darkness grows and evolves into a new form of sentient life similar to a humanoid larvae[8][9].

As the pilgrims of Londor were sent to Lothric[10] with the objective to die[11] some of them died and turned into "angels". One day one of them managed to visit Gertrude, the holy maiden of Gwynevere, Queen of Lothric[12] and it revealed to her a truth capable of manifesting pillars of light together with a heretic tale.[13] The holy maiden was convinced by this enlightenment and began to spread the worship of those she considered "divine messengers"[13]. However this faith was viewed as heresy in Lothric, as it opposed the worship of the ancient gods and the duty to continue linking the First Flame and was consequently unrecognized by any of the Three Pillars that govern the realm[13], leading to a civil war inside the walls of Lothric between the Winged Knights that followed Gertrude's faith and the Angels and those still loyal to the Pillars[14].

It is also possible that the Pilgrim Butterflies have some connection to the Angels as well, not only due the Pilgrim in their name and general physical similarities, but also how some seemingly use the Dragonslayer Armour they control[15] as a host; those that do dying when the Armour was slain.

Locations[]

All the three Angels are found in the The Dreg Heap:

The Dreg Heap

  • The infected corpse connected to the first Angel is located past the courtyard found after exiting the chapel guarded by two Lothric Knights.

Earthen Peak Ruins

  • After climbing the branched path that leads to Desert Pyromancer Zoey, instead of heading toward her location, roll onto the nearby rooftops and follow the path there; the infected corpse connected to the second Angel lies at the end.
  • After the encounter with Desert Pyromancer Zoey, drop off the branched path afterward and onto the rooftops below. Head right and keep descending the winding path until reaching the end, where the infected corpse connected to the third Angel can be found.

Strategy[]

Angels will spawn at fixed locations through the area and immediately start launching a continuous barrage of projectiles at the player, only relenting in their assault for a brief second. Whilst they can be destroyed with ranged weapons, this is a waste of time as they will immediately respawn and resume their attack. The only way to completely eliminate them is to track down and kill their symbiotic cores. Doing so will slay the Angel and it will no longer spawn.

Encounters with Angels force the player into seeking cover from their relentless assaults and moving from point to point. If they lose sight of the player, they will become docile and patrol the skies, resuming their attack if alerted. The Angels in Earthen Peak will summon auras of light that rapidly inflict curse if they are unable to directly attack the player, so they should always remain on guard, even when behind cover.

Hidden Body is a good idea to bypass them, especially at open spaces, as the Angel will completely ignore the player. It is recommended to recast the spell frequently before it wears off to avoid alerting them. The miracles magic barrier and great magic barrier can be cast before being assaulted by one; as both miracles stack, wearing high magic-resistance apparel and these spells makes the magic barrage merely chip damage.

Notes[]

  • Angels are hostile to the Thralls roaming the area and will attack them as well as the player.
  • If the player returns to the beginning of the area after reaching the Filianore's Rest bonfire, or if they have killed the Stone-humped Hag, an Angel will spawn in that location.
    • If the Angel spawns because the player killed the Stone-humped Hag, then it will be aggressive.
    • If the Angel spawned because the player reached Filianore's Rest, it will simply fly around and ignore the player.
    • This Angel will not respawn if killed.

Trivia[]

  • It is likely that Angels represent another evolution stage of humanity caused by the stagnation of the Dark Soul still bound by their shell-shaped protections. While the Pilgrim Butterflies are either failed evolutional step or an incomplete, corrupted version, the Angels present in the Dreg Heap are a more developed stage, although it still consists in a projection bound to pupa living on the ground, therefore vulnerable. A successive, more developed stage is likely to be a fully formed individual Angel, existing as a physical single entity and able to master both the Light and the Dark, like the Darklurker. This could be seen as the most advanced stage of humanity's evolution since the discovery of the Dark Soul.
