No doubt most of us have been cooped up in Elden Ring lately. And I know this wiki is mostly dead at this point, but there's a few oldies that stick around and I wanna share my thoughts and have some discussion around it.
Minor early game spoilers
So let's get a couple of disclaimers out of the way, because my title ain't exactly the most optimistic.
1) I am only 30 hours in Elden Ring. Just made it to the capital.
2) I will be referencing other souls games. I have played and beaten DS1, DS2, DS3, and BB. I have not played DeS or Sekiro and thus they will not be mentioned.
3) I am playing the PS4 version. Unlike others, I have experienced very few if any technical problems, and they do not factor into my opinion on the game.
4) I don't dislike Elden Ring. There's a lot of things it does great, and a huge amount of quality of life stuff. I have no qualms saying it is the most technically superior souls game, in terms of just how many improvements it makes and just how much polished it's mechanics are. Just a few things to list.
Powerstancing
Jumping
No more super long boss walks
New Weapon Types (and the return of older weapon types)
Character Recustomization at any time
The lady that hugs you
Thats if course not everything that's great about Elden Ring, just the stuff that stood out to me and things that got me excited.
However, as much as I enjoy these many improvements, there's a few things that irk me about this game, and those few things are really hindering my enjoyment of the game.
For reference, here's my ranking of the souls games(worst to best).
DS2<DS1<DS3<BB
Right now, I would probably rank Elden Ring in between DS1 and DS3. Is this blasphemous? Well hold on, I have a very good reason. I won't deny the flaws that DS3 has, and I won't deny that Elden Ring is technically superior to DS3 in terms of gameplay and combat. However, there's one thing that makes DS3 have an edge over Elden Ring, and that's bosses. I believe that DS3 has the best bosses in the entire series, they are truly fantastic. And Elden Ring's bosses thus far have been incredibly lackluster and dissapointing, and from what I've heard from friends who are ahead of me in this game, the bosses don't really improve that much. That is a huge negative on Elden Rings record for me, as I value bossfight incredibly high in these games, really good bosses are really fun for me and are where I gain the most enjoyment out of. Can Elden Ring still beat DS3? Yes, it's certainly possible, remember I'm only 30 hours in, so there's plenty of time for Elden Ring to outperform DS3 in even more areas, if not bosses.
As for Bloodborne, I don't think Elden Ring will beat Bloodborne for me. Bloodborne is very special because of it's setting, atmosphere, and weapons for me, and Elden Ring has lacked any ounce of coming closs to Bloodborne in these regards. I may get lynched for this, but I find nothing special about Elden Rings setting. Don't get me wrong, the world is beautiful, it's probably tied with RDR2 for the most beautiful games I've ever played. But the setting itself just feels like generic fantasy to me. And the atmosphere isn't special either, I never feel any emotions while exploring, it doesn't evoke anything in me like the terror and spookiness I do when I play Bloodborne. The only thing Elden Ring could beat Bloodborne in is weapons, but that is to be determined.
So what do I think is wrong with Elden Ring? Well there's a few things. I've already mentioned the bad bosses and boring setting, but there's a few more.
The Open World
This open world, as far as open worlds go, feels incredibly lacking and barren. Comparing it to the open worlds of Skyrim, The Witcher 3, RDR2, or Fallout, and you can tell this is From Softs first try at open worlds. When I first started the game, I thought I would completely ignore the story and just go exploring, finding cool loot, rummaging through dungeons that I was told would be full scale huge dungeons. I was wrong. There's like nothing. It's just empty. You aren't at all rewarded for going out of your way to explore nooks and hidden paths tucked away. At this point I feel safe just riding past new areas on my horse because the game has taught me I won't be rewarded for exploring. The few things that there are are copy pasted basic ruins and church's with a basement and locked door with a chest inside. The dungeons I was told were huge are not huge, they are tiny caves with two rooms, one of which is the boss room. The only things that get close to the promised size are the mines and underground rivers, which is cool, but it still completely deincentivizes me from exploring more than just mines which are marked on my map and the rivers which I've already found.
The Items
There's an astounding lack of loot in this world. If the rate at which I'm finding weapons right now continues into the endgame, I'm confident this game has less weapons than DS3. I've been stuck using a weapon I don't want to be using for hours now, and there's just not many options to switch. Fuck it took me like 5 fucking hours to find a single weapon once the game started. You're literally stuck with your starting weapon for a pretty damn long time. I love customization in these games, the more variety the better imo. It's one of the few things I respect DS2 for, they got their weapons and fashion down pat.
Other Minor Pet Peeves
Some of the enemy designs are fucking terrible. Renalla is literally just Deacons x Elana and she won't let you breath for one fucking second. The giant hands in the manor castle are legit the worst enemies I've probably ever had the displeasure of fighting in all of these games. I'd rather fight both the fishing Hamlet sharks to get the Rakuyo.
A lot of enemies and bosses get copy pasted, and some of the enemy layouts remind me of Shrine of Amana in how unnecessarily liberally they're placed about.
In Conclusion
I don't hate this game, but I think anyone who says this game is a 10/10 masterpiece game of the century is either in denial or just refuses to look at this games glaring flaws because "muh open world dark souls". I honestly think this game would have been better if they ditched the open world, because my favorite parts of this game are the linear levels like Stormveil. Such a dissapoinment too, because the gameplay and combat is truly peak from soft, and it's a shame it's being blemished by the flaws in this game that prevent me from having as good a time as others seem to be having.
