I’m part way through my first play through of dark souls remastered and just beat the gaping dragon with help from Solaire and another person I summoned (first try). I was wondering if that would leave me unprepared. Should I level up elsewhere before continuing to Blighttown or just go straight into Blighttown and try my best to level up there. Sorry if this is written badly or if it’s a dumb question as I said it’s my first play through.

I have used the zweihander a bit and might go back to it but, maybe this is just me being a beginner, I like the protection that the shield provides. Is the bell gargoyle halberd any good?

It has average dmg and crappy scaling imo, there are better weapons
And you can use a zweihander and a shield at the same time, you'll just have to meet the stat requirements and make sure your equipment load stays low. If you're gonna use the zweihander I'd recommend getting Havel's ring if you don't have it yet

Personally I'd use claymore over the zwei: it's faster, lighter, has one of the best movesets in the game, and uses less stamina per swing. Up to you though

It's on the top of the bridge leading to undead parish, so it'll be a little bit hard to get it unless you kill the dragon

If you go from the Parish back to the bridge then the drake won't be there so you can safely grab the claymore, I think for your first playthrough it's the weapon to use since it's just all around good even without scaling bonuses
What I would do is head down into blighttown and slowly make your way down to the bottom. At the bottom there is a bonfire and a strange looking elevator that leads back up that is very useful when coming and going from blighttown. Beat the area boss and you'll have access to another boss that is very easy and gives you a bunch of souls. There really isn't any need to farm for souls in this game. If you kill all the enemies and bosses, you'll have more then enough to be doing killer damage.
As for weapons I would also reccomend the claymore. And when it comes to stat allocation, a trick is to check how much damage is increased with each point in the leveling menu. Whichever increases your damage at a faster rate, pick that but continue checking because at some point it will switch. You don't even need to understand how the alphanumeric value of the scaling works because you can just monitor the damage in real time to make sure you're always getting thr most out of your points.
